Big Joe confident lessons have been learned

Joe Munro is looking forward to the upcoming season and is confident that Ealing Trailfinders can avoid becoming embroiled in a relegation dogfight when the Greene King IPA Championship begins in September.

Ben Ward’s side finished in 11th place last season and only secured their spot in the division on the penultimate weekend with a 30-24 win over Jersey Reds. With Yorkshire Carnegie the opposition on the opening weekend, the 6’5” centre is under no illusions as to how important a strong start will be.

On the second weekend the team will head west to Cornish Pirates before old rivals Jersey arrive in west London. They precede the first capital derby of the season when the team take on London Irish at the Majeski Stadium.

“I don’t think we can get too far ahead of ourselves and we have to think about those first few games,” Munro said. “It is about putting what went wrong last year, right.

“You can see already what the coaches are trying to do so that we are really going to start with a bang and we are going in the right direction so far.”

Thirteen new players have arrived at Vallis Way over the summer and along with Munro and the rest of the squad have been training five days a week since the start of June.

The players have been hard at work in the gym and on the pitch to ensure that they are in the best physical condition and understand the game plan in time for the big kick off.

“It is going really well,” Munro said. “The first three weeks were really tough, but they are things you have to do, but it is great to bring out the ball and integrate with the lads.

“It is really obvious that Wardy (Ben Ward) has brought in some real quality this year and you can see that over the last few weeks. They’ve all been at Championship clubs before and they’ve added a lot of energy and the lads have welcomed them in.”
