Kenny happy to play role in forwards’ dominance

Flanker Danny Kenny may have been nursing numerous bumps and bruises following Ealing Trailfinders 36-7 win over Blaydon on Saturday, but he was still smiling after a strong showing from the forward pack.

Micky Ward’s side arrived with the reputation for winning their matches up front, but Ealing Trailfinders’ pack enjoyed the upper hand against their opponents from the north east and weighed in with two of the side’s five tries, from hooker Andrei Radoi and flanker Arthur Ellis.

“We were told beforehand that they were going to have a big forward pack and be physical, but we did our homework and did our jobs, ” Kenny said.

“They had multiple lineouts on our 5m line and we defended them well and they got no tries against us as a pack, so for the pack it was an enjoyable day.”

The win put Ealing Trailfinders top of National 1 with a full complement of 15 points from 15 and they lead Fylde and Richmond by a single point.

Ben Ward’s side secured the bonus point before halftime after Phil Chesters grabbed a brace to go alongside Radoi and Ellis’ efforts. However, Chris Kinloch’s try five minutes into the second half marked the end of the scoring and for the remainder of the match the two defences came out on top.

“It’s another five points again, ” Kenny added. “The first half was very good. We were very clinical in everything we did and took our chances.

“In the second half we let off a bit, but our defence was really solid especially after last week when we said we wanted to make a statement in defence after letting in 30 points.”
