Munro building towards pre-season clashes

New arrival Joe Munro has been hard at work with the rest of the team for the past five weeks of pre-season, but with one month until the first pre-season match, the centre expects the focus and work to step up to higher levels both on the pitch and in the gym.

Ealing Trailfinders travel away to Pontypridd on 15 August and follow that up with two more road trips to Hartpury College on 22 August and Coventry on 29 August before the Greene King IPA season kicks off away to Rotherham on Sunday 6 September.

“The 15th we’ve got Pontypridd and that is what we’re building to, ” Munro said. “We’re not getting too far ahead of ourselves and not thinking about the season yet. We’re thinking about those first pre-season games and being the level we need to be.

“The first couple of weeks were a lot of conditioning, a lot of running and a lot of weights. There was a little bit of rugby in there, but now we’ve become rugby focused and getting the combinations right and knowing how each other play.”

The Windsor-native arrived at Vallis Way over the summer from Nottingham, where he had played for three seasons and scored four tries in 72 appearances.

He is one of a host of players that Director of Coaching Ben Ward has brought in to provide much needed experience and know-how from English rugby’s second tier.

Two seasons ago Nottingham endured tough times on the field and off and Ealing Trailfinders enjoyed home and away wins over the East Midlanders. However, last season they were a side transformed and finished fifth to show how quickly fortunes can change in the Championship.

“Everyone knows the Championship is such a tough league and you have to be ready for the season and be firing right from the off, ” Munro said.

“You also need to be very consistent. It is easy to play well for one or two matches, but you need to do that for five or six and really get on a good run. You need a big squad because it is a long season and you need to swap people in keep them fresh.”
