Smid arrives as Callum Wilson heads north
Ealing Trailfinders have added further depth to their squad by bringing in Rayn Smid for the remainder of the Greene King IPA Championship 2016-17 season.
Smid moves up the M4 from Bristol and played for them at Vallis Way last season. He also played alongside Glen Townson who joined from the west country outfit in November.
During his time with Bristol the 24-year-old flanker or number 8 played 10 times, most recently against Worcester Warriors in the Anglo-Welsh Cup earlier this season.
“I’m really happy to have joined Ealing Trailfinders and I’ve been impressed with the set-up and squad in the short time I’ve been here so far,” Smid said.
“I’m looking forward to getting stuck in to training, making my contribution to the team and helping them continue to their good form into 2017.”
Smid joined Bristol in 2015 from Western Province in his native South Africa and he featured for the Cape Town-based team in the Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup.
His performance earned him a place in the Western Stormers 2014 Super Rugby training squad. At the end of that season he then moved to Cavalieri Prato in Italy and played three times for the Tuscan club before he returned to Cape Town.
“Rayn impressed when he played against us last season,” Director of Rugby Ben Ward said. “He’s a powerful ball-carrier and adds depth and competitiveness to our back row.”
While Smid arrives at Vallis Way, Callum Wilson is leaving to join Rotherham Titans after 18 months with the club.
He joined from England 7s having also played for Loughborough Students and he scored three tries in 13 appearances during his time in west London.
“Callum has departed to look for more game time and the chance at Rotherham Titans arose,” Ward said. “I want to thank Callum for all his efforts at Ealing Trailfinders and wish him all the best for the future.”
