Wilson up and running to secure bonus point in Doncaster

Callum Wilson ran in his first Ealing Trailfinders try since joining in the summer and it was vitally important as it secured a bonus point from the trip to Doncaster Knights.

Wilson’s score came in the 69th minute and after Alex Davies converted it there was no more scoring. It meant despite the 23-17 defeat Ben Ward’s team were able to leave Yorkshire with a losing bonus point.

“It was another tough game away in Yorkshire and we managed to get a bonus point, which wasn’t the target, but isn’t the worst result, ” Wilson said. “They were a good team with lots of big ball carriers and we nullified that early on.

“They came back into it before half-time and the early part of the second half, but we finished quite strongly and we couldn’t quite get that converted try we needed to win it.”

Ealing Trailfinders have now claimed three bonus points from three away trips to Yorkshire and with their home win over Cornish Pirates means they sit in 10th place with seven points.

Wilson’s try came after fellow wing Rhys Crane broke the Doncaster line and then timed his off-load to perfection. It set Wilson running from his own half for his first try since joining from England 7’s over the summer.

“Rhys made a really good break and he gave me the ball with loads of space and I was happy to go over for my first try, ” Wilson said.

“In sevens I would hold my width on the pitch, with Ealing Trailfinders I work more to get my hands on the ball. Working out structures to get my hands on the ball has been a tough but enjoyable challenge.”

Next up are promotion favourites Bristol, who come to Vallis Way on Saturday. Two years ago Ealing Trailfinders stopped Andy Robinson’s side from securing a four-try bonus point, but Wilson is aiming for more.

“We are probably underdogs at home, though we always feel we can do something, ” he said. “I’m excited by it and hopefully we can get a scalp here.”
